There is a lot to like about this work. Let's start with exuberant
praise. " Cat Portrait in Profile" is perhaps one of the greatest cat
paintings ever. An artistic equal to Rosa Bonheur, famed 19th-century
cat painter, Henriette Ronner-Knip created it. Her execution is simple
and graphic, and her deft style and restricted color palette rival
Manet's. The painting's striking composition is defined by utter
minimalism, with a charming cat depicted in profile. The cat's
gray-and-white fur works harmoniously with the taupe background. Most
importantly, it appeals to cat lovers, celebrating the essence of feline
beauty and confidence. In person, it looks better. Signed lower left.
Provenance
William de Winter, 24 October 1993, Lot 253;
Acquired by the current owner from the above.
Framed size 22 x 25 3/4 in. ( 55.8 x 65.4 cm.)
