Luks was famous for painting people from impoverished slum areas. br The work was mostly likely painted from life and portrays a youth haphazardly dressed. Luks describes the subject in quick rapid-fire bush strokes in the post-impressionist style. br On a recent trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I snapped this photo of a George Luks currently hanging. It's George Luks " The Old Duchess" who was a woman of depraved rank. br The condition is very good. There is a heavy layer of dammar varnish covering the work and yellowing it. When clean colors should sing. Scattered craquelure .
