This is more than a statement about American hedonism. It's a photograph that speaks to ideas of precise composition, positive and negative spaces and pushed color. To the human eye, the sky is not actually that blue and the beach chairs are not that bright. My idea was to extend the potential of color photography without post-manipulation. Primary colors burst off the page. In 1977 most color photography was snapshots or images that would have worked equally as well in black and white. This work was a reaction to that type of work
