There are several breakthrough themes happening in this photo. Firstly, it's a very early example of staged photography. The 40's red card is actually an 8-foot painting that I painted based on an old car ad in Fortune Magazine. It is propped up with a support beam affixed to the back and secured to the ground below. This is a straight shot with no photoshop super-imposition. Secondly, this photo is a union of artist and photographer. I painted something and then I photographed it. Robert Funk is a pioneer of toy photography, doll photography, miniature photography, and staged photography. He also photographs his own paintings.
