The cowboy is a toy . The kid's gun is real. That's why I have him pointing up at the sky and not at me. It was shot on the lower east side. First light creates a beautiful but puzzling silhouette. Smoke comes out of a manhole and not the barrel of a gun. This was done in 1975, years before "Staged Photography" was on the aesthetic radar. Another version of this "Cowboy" work was published in Camera 35 Magazine in June 1977. Camera 35, was one of the few photography magazines in the 1970's and pre-digital era. It was a newsstand magazine and widely viewed in the photography world. Today, Camera 35 is but almost forgotten. In the 1970's it was an important vehicle for presenting photography, especially color photography.
