Multiple light sources combined with dramatic de Chirico-esque black shadows are an examination into a new way of doing color photography. 41 years ago this was quite a radical thing. Back then, almost everyone was just snapping pics in top light. The cop in the center of the composition is the only sharp figure and therefore makes the work more complex. Background figures are blurred yet defined by flash. The center figure of a cop is a 4inch cut-out. He is held in my left hand while the camera is in my right. In the 1970s, I realized that there are very few things around you to photograph that's interesting. The world is pretty much an expected and visually boring place. There's not much to shoot out of the ordinary. I had a flashbulb moment. You have to make your photos rather than take your photos. Today, the world of the 1970s looks interesting. The cars were different, People looked different. Then it was the same old thing over and over again. If we removed the cut-out illustration of the cop out of this photo. It would be a nice pic.
