In the late 1970's and early 1980's only a handful of photographers were using bold color, simple graphic forms and sophisticated color. It was the cutting edge style at the time. In this picture, the long sensuous 1950's pin-ups style legs is a 3 foot airbrush painting by me. I'm acting as a painter and photographer. The leg painting is held in one hand and my Nikon is in the other. A 20mm lens, stopped down to 32 creates foreshortening. It also exaggerates and elongates the actual length of the painting. The girl and the water tower play off of one another. Both are leggy creatures that support a bulbous corpus. As with almost all of my photos, I was trying to create an image that I have not quite seen before. I have seen portraits of people standing up against a wall, people sitting on a couch, studio still lifes, snap-shots, panoramic landscapes and social documentation. My feeling was unless these styles are done is a very daring and original way, I always thought it was low hanging fruit. Those sort of formula photos would always be the same story, but with different characters. With all these photo options off the table, what on earth does one do? Ah-hah..... put some sexy legs against a water tower!
