In the late 1970s the breakthrough style in color photography was not the snapshot but designing images with fields of saturated color to exploit the inherent qualities of color in color photography. This graphic style was used with my cut-out painting on plywood of a yellow fish. Driving along the coast near Essaouira, I noticed the striking red of a highway sign set against the deepest of deep blue skies. I stopped the car and held my painting of a fish in one hand and with my Nikon in the other hand snapped the picture. The flat painted image of the bull next to the flat painted image of a fish may depict an interspecies dialog but also creates a powerful and original image composed mostly of primary colors. Rarely could you get women to look in your direction in Morocco. Fortunately, I was the center of attention in this barren landscape and two veiled onlookers punctuated the composition. Robert Funk is a pioneer of staged, miniature and thingie photography. He is a photographer and was a New York advertising art director for Print and TV. He was widely published in the 1970's and 1980's.
