A larger version of this work was offered by Sotheby's for $500,000 . It is now in a Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille. They accquired it for 220,000 Euros. Nicolas de Largillierre, one of Europe's premier painters of portraits, history paintings, and still lifes during the late seventeenth century and the first four decades of the eighteenth Rococo style. This distinguished portrait of Nicolas de Largillierre's daughter holds a particular interest and importance within the artist's oeuvre as the choice of model automatically confers the composition with a unique sensibility and tenderness. Marguerite Elisabeth de Largillierre was born the 30th January 1701 following the artist's marriage to Marguerite Elisabeth Forest, daughter of the landscape painter Jean-Baptiste Forest. Marguerite the younger was the oldest of three children and is depicted here in the year of her own marriage, on January 13, 1726, at the age of 25, to war minister Jean-Baptiste Houzé de La Boullaye. Widowed in 1733, she subsequently remarried Jacques de Farevolles. br His work is in the Ashmolean Museum (University of Oxford), the Fitzwilliam Museum (University of Cambridge), the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Louvre, the National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.), the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City, Missouri), the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg and Pinacoteca di Brera (Milan), Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (Lisbon), Museum de Fundatie (Zwolle),[2] the Detroit Institute of Arts (Detroit) are among the public collections holding works by Nicolas de Largillière. He was a painter of French nobility.
