Paul Rand was a seminal figure in the world of graphic design, corporate identity. He was also a painter. Untitled was done in 1955 at the height of abstract expressionism and totes a simple flatness of the color field painters. The painting walks a fine line between abstraction and representation. It's imbued with a child-like sense of play and yet is deceptively complex. The X Factor is how effortlessly Rand unifies the the pictorial elements. The vase with flowers, fishbowl with fish and the dark shape of the table are all interconnected in a harmonious way. A white hairline reminiscent of Milton Avery defines shape and contour. Rand's desaturated color is not used as a means of description but as a way to support the overall design. Positive and negative spaces play off of one another and strike a prefect asymmetrical balance. The result is a charming painting that has a naive sophistication and the perfect counterpart to Rand's groundbreaking designs for IBM, Westinghouse, ABC, UPS and Next Computers. br One could think of Motherwell but then this work was done in 1955. Yet Rand achieves greater sense of unexpected compositional balance. So who was influencing who? Celebrated painters like Mary Fedden and a cast of others childlike artists owe to Rand's trailblazing minimalist child-like style. Since Rand was thought of as a designer and less of a painter, art history needs to be rewritten and credit needs to be reassigned.
