I painted this giant sunflower to a height of 9 feet. It was based on a 19th century English engraving. The painting comes apart in 2 parts. Since it was shot 41 years ago, I forget exactly where the flower breaks in half. At the time I did not own a car. I took my Big Yellow Flower onto the New York City subway. The image was photographed in the Bronx Botanical Gardens because I thought there would be some symbiosis between a big painted flower set in front of a field of real flowers. At the time, I was trying to create images that I had not see before in the history of photography. I think this shot accomplishes that.
