Mitchell Funk: He was Color when Color wasn't Cool. Today, we see a lot of color photography like this. However in 1975, most color photography was shot with boring light and formula compositions. Funk expresses his thirst to innovate and to disrupt the traditional aesthetic. The deep saturated cobalt blue sky is achieved by choosing the right day and using a polarizing filter. Intense direct lighting illuminates the bright red of the sign and side of the building creating bold colors and deep shadows. All of this is brought together with a composition where pictorial space is divided up in a radically unexpected architectonic way.
