While on assignment in 1980 for a Life Magazine story on drought in Texas, Mitchell Funk encountered this vast landscape near Wichita Falls. A windmill with a wood fence and barns are silhouetted against a dramatic sunset. Like many of Funk's trailblazing images of the 1970s and 1980s this image is characterized by graphic simplification and discreet use of color. The narrative reminds recalls the "Grapes of Wrath dustbowl. Funk's oeuvre is wide-ranging, but it's his abstract colorful landscapes have been featured on the covers of many newsstand magazines. This image was not picked by the Life editors who decided to choose Funk's more documentary images for the story. Mitchell Funk is signed, dated and numbered 3\\u002F15, lower right recto. Other sizes are available and the fine art photograph is unframed and printed later.
