The "masonite" on which Atomic Sky is painted, is a perfect match of material, size, frame type, nails, etc with the Weber from the Forum Gallery 1950. It also matches our other Weber "Nude on Chair" circa 1950. br Throughout Weber’s long career, his style changed and evolved. He experimented with Fauvism, Cubism, Dynamism, Expressionism, and Futurism . This evolution of style and experimentation is evident here. Atomic Sky is quick work, perhaps a study or sketch with heavy impasto. During the Post-War period of the late 1940s and early 1950's, the US was engaged in testing atomic bomb testing. Weber appears to be reacting to the mushroom clouds and nuclear detonations of the time. He chooses to depict soldiers. They are armed with guns and bayonets. One soldier gazes out to the sky. The other soldier kneels down, helmet off, and face turned to the ground prayer-like humbling moment. The bright yellow light of the sky defines their profiles and lights up their faces with an unnaturally strong and intense light. Perhaps this is a protest piece. Weber was very religious. Trinity ( a religious term) was the code name of the first detonation of a nuclear weapon. It was conducted by the United States Army on July 16, 1945, as part of the Manhattan Project. The test was conducted in the Jornada del Muerto desert about 35 miles southeast of Socorro, New Mexico. There is another interpretation. This could be a painting about thankfulness.Two soldiers have made it to the end of the day. One is looking out in to a distant sunset and they other is praying.
