Plump, fleshy, or a voluptuous nude - you describe it as you see it. Signed, titled, and dated lower left: John Steuart Curry 1934 "Hilda Nellis". The present work depicts a natural, 1930s middle-aged salt-of-the-earth American nude honestly and straightforwardly. She is likely from a rural community and perhaps Curry's native Kansas. The artist shows her wearing only a headband and two simple bracelets. She looks away from the viewer to emphasize her bulbous breasts and invite an investigation into her flowing curves. There is something genuine in the sitter and the artist's presentation of her that embodies the Regionalist aesthetic about the plain, simple and elemental. John Steuart Curry is best known for his famous and dramatic portrait of John Brown the famous abolitionist who was later hanged for his opposition to slavery. John Brown is currently hanging in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
