The present Joseph Stella work is a sensitive study of a botanical arrangement of thistles in a vase resting atop a Corinthian pedestal that sits on a tabletop. Signed, dated lower right. Provenance: Christie's, Richard York Gallery
Artistically, Stella is making a statement about the interaction of shapes and forms. At first glance, it appears that his color scheme is somewhat restrictive, using gray blues, grays, and ochers. However, in person, there is a richness, depth, and understated saturation to these colors. This is in counterpoint to his Alizarin crimson wood panel, which forms a vertical on the right side of the composition. The condition is excellent. Work is framed in a simple wood frame by Richard York Gallery. Work is framed in a simple gilt wood frame with a few minor abrasions.
Signed, dated 1938, and inscribed Italy lower right. Thistles, 1938 Pastel on paper 25 3/4 × 18 3/4 in Work is framed Christie's, New York Very strong in person. Gallery stickers on verso. Exhibited at Richard York Gallery, New York, March 31 - May 27, 1994, 'Joseph Stella's Nature.' Work presents very well in person. It is large and has a good presence.
