Eugene Camille Fitsch paints a quick and loose impression of Old New York at night. br In the foreground, we see people entering the El and some standing in front of a Newsstand. The El's metal roof divides the composition horizontally into the two worlds. The bottom is for pedestrians, and the top is allotted to soaring skyscrapers with their dramatic lighting. The moody dark blue color scheme conveys the spirit of the city with a multitude of light sources. The work is more abstract than representational, as the artist focuses on color, shape, form, and glowing light to create an emotionally charged composition. Elegantly framed to 34.5 x 27 x 2.5 br Signed lower right - Provenance: Bonhams, New York, D. Wigmore Fine Art. Condition: Good/Fair. We are unsure, but the painting may have been slightly over-cleaned to reveal some of the underlying canvas texture. Then again, it may not have been. Its current state could be very close to how the artist created it, with thin paint in some areas and some light impasto in other regions. It has been revarnished; in its current state, it presents well with bright, saturated colors.
