The artist captures a magical moment where the sun wanes behind a bank of clouds as a wave crashes on the beach. One pictorial element recedes while the other advances. In 1875, it was an avante-grade concept to capture the abstract beauty of nature for solely artistic reasons. Which artists were capturing moody and dramatic sunsets and documenting the effect and magic hourlight of form at this time? In one of his most notable works, Monet was trailblazing this this type of imagery with his early morning light skimming across water at Le Havre . Bridgman may have used this as a study for another work that included a nude figure in the foreground. Unlined original canvas, surface dirt, need illumination to bring out color. Provenance: Heritage - unframed - would benefit from a cleaning. - We posted an image of the artwork in a blackframe with a gold liner. This is a recommendation. The work will look much better reframed. The color of the artwork is more accurate in the blackframe.
