Two Women by George Tooker is a psychologically engaging portrait of contrasts. An untidy, older, overweight woman is seen slumped in a chair, asleep and lost in a dream. Her head tilts back, her skirt is pulled up, and her right hand nestles her crotch. Centered in a doorway to her immediate left is a fit, nude young woman in the prime of life. She displays herself atop the second step as if it's a pedestal, conveying that she is an art object ripe for contemplation. The young woman faces the viewer frontally. Her sleek, nude body is in a symmetrical pose. With full frontal nudity, her arms hang slightly off her body with palms turned outward, framing her exposed vagina. br Most likely we are viewing a lesbian-themed dream about an erotic interaction between an older woman and a young nubile beauty. Notice how the head of the older woman leans in towards the doorway. Her open mouth is in the same horizontal space as the younger woman's protruding vagina. Tooker was a gay man, and it's interesting how he explores sexuality between women. br Although this is a work on paper in pencil, it is not a loose rough but a finish complete work in itself. br Signed lower left.
