Art Deco Vanity Fair Magazine Illustration in pen and ink on paper to illustrate an article about the pursuit of true love. Female illustrator Anne Harriet Fish depicts floating Cupids assisting in the loving process for seemingly mismatched couples. In the upper left, two women engage in a soft embrace. ( In 1920, to show images of lesbian attraction in a major publication was more than daring.) A bald older man courts a much more stunning young flapper, and a fledgling boy adores an older woman. The work is signed in the lower left of the running scroll. br The Course of True Love. Circa 1920. br Pen and ink on board. br Signed "Fish" in lower left. Title inscribed in pencil in upper margin. br Publication: br Vanity Fair magazine, unidentified issue. br 14 x 10 3/4 in. (35.6 x 27.3 cm.), Frame: 19 3/4 x 16 in. (50.2 x 40.6 cm.) br Written in pencil on the back of the work: Typed label taped to verso, "The Course of True Love - Vanity Fair. This is the sad story of the difficulties in the path of true love for the young. / Once upon a time, Cupid was able to force the ages to look on and to pipe for the young to dance and make love to. / But now it is the fashion for old men to dance with young girls and for fledgling boys to adore old women. / As the young must be in fashion, it is only the middle-aged and somewhat plump that can meet on equal terms in affection and love of much rich food. The cupids in despair become waiters." br Condition: Fair. Paper has two horizontal folds and some creases, most visible with raking light
