Oswaldo Guayasamín creates a soulful and insightful portrait of a young
black girl. The artist is known for his sensitive depictions of the raw
human condition, systemic injustice, and the struggles of Latin
America's Indigenous populations. At the time, blacks in Ecuador
represented less than 4 percent of the population and were discriminated
against by the ruling classes. This rare painting features a subject
who was most likely from the port city of Guayaquil.
