Legendary female illustrator, Peggy Bacon, paints a moonlit scene of a
cat running through the quiet sanctuary of a cemetery. Cast in a
nocturnal blue tone, Bacon creates a poetic vision of peace and
tranquility. She pairs this with a sense of excited anticipation of the
occult, a cat leaping as a ghostly figure emerges from the darkness to
chase it. It's masterfully rendered in her loose style, which is simple
yet sophisticated in its understated refinement. The work has a storied
exhibition history with at least seven galleries and museums included.
The
work is titled "His Ancient Enemy" by Peggy Bacon (1895-1987), 1953.
