The present work by Haitian Artist Andre Pierre depicts the visualization of an inner spiritual state. A Vodou ceremony is shown, led by a priest (oungan), to honor ancestors and connect with spirits known as lwa through drumming, dancing, and procession. The foreground shows a large fire flanked by a row of trees cut off at the trunk. In the lower right-hand corner, three dedicated drummers (ountogi) drive the ceremony with rapid, complex rhythms and call-and-response chants, building spiritual energy to a high pitch. Opposite the drummers, a headless man is shown. The dancers witness it as his detached head rises past an image of a cross and into a higher spiritual domain. Haitian Vodou is a rich, syncretic religion that blends traditional West and Central African spiritualities with Roman Catholicism. The work is signed lower right A. Pierre.
