This is most likely a self-portrait. We see the artist in a reflection holding a small 1950s camera while his wife in the foreground holds a large branch. William Schock was Brazilian and a man of color. He was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on November 3, 1913, and shortly after, moved to Cleveland, Ohio. After a stint in WWII, Schock returned to Clevland and began teaching at the Cleveland Institute of Art and exhibiting locally and nationally. After a successful teaching and exhibiting career, he and his artist wife, Hazel Janicki were killed in an automobile accident in 1976. Schock's work is defined by unnatural and pushed color, perhaps influenced by the Fauves combined with his unexpected and off-axis compositions. This look is in vogue today by many of the art world's hottest artists. Signed lower left. Inscribed on verso. Overall good condition. One small repaired puncture 3\\u002F16 long on the top of the woman's hair. Otherwise presents quite well. Formerly in the collection of the Canton Art Institute as stated on the presentation plaque. Framed size 24.5 x 35. Housed in the original period frame
