Brazilian/ American Artist William Schock paints a portrait of a Muslim woman in a Hijab gazing directly at the viewer. She is set against an obelisk and an arch in a well-balanced composition with a flattened perspective that embraces understated minimalism. The scene is bathed in a palette of yellow, green, and ochre. It is signed lower left.

William Schock was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil on November 3, 1913.
He served in WWII in German, France and North Africa. This work may reflect this time in Oran, Algeria.
After the war, Schock attended classes at Boston Museum of Fine Arts School with the aid of the G.I. Bill and studied with Ben Shahn and Karl Zerbe. Soon Schock was teaching the Cleveland Institute of Art.
He had shown works Cleveland Museum of Art May Show as early as 1931. He is in the collections of Akron Art Institute, the Canton Art Institute and the Butler Institute of American Art, among others. William Schock and his wife Hazel Janicki papers, 1936-1976 are in the collection of the Smithsonian.Janicki papers, 1936-1976 are in the collection of the Smithsonian.
