Salvatore Grippi was my art teacher at Ithaca College from 1970 to 1972. br I remember him well. br Grippi was doing work that rivaled de Kooning and, during the same time in history - the 1950's. br "Abstract Figures" by Grippi was influenced by his landing at Normandy Beach on 6 June 1944. Grippi was part of the Landing crew on the Normandy Invasion. Grippi investigates the boundaries between abstraction and representation in this work of nude women. br Grippi exhibited with the giants of the movement, Kooning, Nevelson, and Kline. br Grippi's work is in the collections of the MOMA, The Whitney. The Met., The Library of Congress and the Hirshhorn Collection. br In the 1950's he was with the Zabriskie Gallery and exhibited with William Baziotes, Adolph Gottlieb, Willem de Kooning, Michael Goldberg and Louise Nevelson at the famed Stable Gallery from 1953 - 1957. br In 2011, he was honored with a solo retrospective at Cornell University's Johnson Museum of Art. br Sadly, he is currently off the art world radar, despite how important of an early abstract expressionist painter he was. Canvas is slightly undulating, with a few scattered areas where the paint is flaking. Scattered areas of light surface grime and dirt. Canvas is slightly loose on the stretchers. Isolated areas of craqueleur.
