Salvatore Grippi was my art professor at Ithaca college from 1970- 1971

Who was doing paintings like this in 1950? Jackson Pollack, Willem De
Kooning and Salvatore Grippi and a few others. Grippi was on the
landing crew a Normandy Beach WWII and his early work reflects from the
of the tension and stress of the moment.
Grippi exhibited with the giants of the movement, Kooning, Nevelson, and Kline.
Grippi's work is in the collections of the MOMA, The Whitney. The Met., The Library of Congress and the Hirshhorn Collection.
In
the 1950's he was with the Zabriskie Gallery and exhibited with William
Baziotes, Adolph Gottlieb, Willem de Kooning, Michael Goldberg and
Louise Nevelson at the famed Stable Gallery from 1953 - 1957.
In 2011, he was honored with a solo retrospective at Cornell University's Johnson Museum of Art.
Sadly,
he is currently off the art world radar, despite how important of an
early abstract expressionist painter he was. Perhaps this will change in
the near future.
