Emmanuel Villanis was well known primarily for his bronzes of beautiful young women. With Phryne, the sculptor is working in marble. Since stone is not in the least forgiving, it's remarkable how deftly Villanis get every structural part of the sitter's head and upper torso correct. It's a testament to his high skill as a great artist. Moreover, Villanis sculpts the female beautifully and sensuously . Phryne has a stunning profile from both sides. Her nez retroussé is a hallmark of the artist's oeuvre and defines the work as being ultra-feminine. The sitter's attractiveness in art is always a driver of price. Phryne is a sublime masterwork and speaks to the exceptional talent of the artist. This work is a blend of Neo-Classicism and Art Nouveau. Provenace: Original Miami Antique Show
