The
name Ray Johnson most prominently refers to the seminal American artist
Ray Johnson (1927–1995). Known as "New York's most famous unknown
artist," he was a pioneer of Pop Art, Neo-Dada, and the founder of the
global Mail Art.
The present work is an exmaple of his early work
when he bypassed traditional galleries to distribue this art directly
thought the U.S. Postal service.
Mail art assemblage titled "Box With
Hinge," created from a mailing box sent from Johnson to Buecker with
collaged boards attached by a hinge, signed and dated March 2.
Framed
in a shadowbox by Buecker, reverse bearing Buecker & Harpsichords
stamp, handwritten notations “Ray Johnson March 2 1963” and “Do Not
Repair,” and a Nassau County Museum of Art loan label documenting
exhibition from February 7 to April 8, 1984.
